Blue Energy
A quite unknown source is energy is mixing salt water with fresh water, called Blue Energy. The difference in salinity can drive ions, which can generate electricity. Membranes and/or activated carbon are used to separate the positive and negative ions, and therefore create a battery driven by the salinity difference of the water. In theory, the power that is released from the river water that flows into the ocean worldwide, exceeds the global electricity demand. Therefore this technology can contribute substantially to a sustainable energy production. In this visionary theme electrochemistry, membrane technology and carbon material science are the know-how fields that are combined in the research program.
