2011
In 2001, Marcel Mulder was appointed as professor on Sustainable Water Technology and Membrane Technology at the University of Twente. Stationed in Leeuwarden, he was and the one who planted the seed for Wetsus. Unfortunately, before he was able to see the further development of Wetsus, he passed away on November 17, 2002. The Board and the Supervisory Board of Wetsus have decided that in memory of him, and to extend his ideas, an annual Professor Marcel Mulder Science Prize will be awarded to the Wetsus researcher who made the most exceptional performance in the field of water technology in the past year.
Annemiek ter Heijne did her PhD research in the Wetsus program, partly in Leeuwarden and partly in Wageningen. Annemiek worked on development of the Microbial Fuel Cell. This is a new device that is able to directly produce electricity from wastewater using recently discovered bacteria. However, for the system to function well, Platinum is needed as a catalyst. She investigated how this precious and very expensive Platinum can be replaced by a cheaper alternative. Only such an alternative can make the MFC cost effective.
During her PhD project, Annemiek published 12 papers on her work. All are published in high quality journals. The work of Annemiek shows again that top science and practical application can go hand in hand. This has recently also been acknowledged by the research school Sense, who awarded her with the Sense research award for best PhD thesis 2010-2012.
