You would imagine that new technologies will have brought a multitude of solutions, but with other new materials and innovations around, we are facing more challenges than ever. Novel persistent contaminants and mobile pollutants silently accumulate in our water and the environment, while conventional treatment boundaries are being pushed to their limits. Protecting water quality today requires a shift to new innovations.
In this edition of our Science & Technology newsletter, we highlight how we are developing tangible solutions to these invisible threats across three distinct frontiers: detection, removal, and destruction.

Plasma reactor efficiently destroys PFAS, given the right spark

That destroying PFAS is not a walk in the park has become clear. Yet Roman Klymenko, of the Applied Water Physics theme, says he’s found a way: using plasma discharge over a funnel, you can make quick work of the forever chemical. In his latest publication in the Journal of Visualized Experiments, Klymenko explains how they investigated what would be the best sort of plasma to use to make a scalable solution.

Flow Cytometry: a microbiology tool for detecting nanoplastics

Nanoplastics are everywhere, yet they are amazingly hard to trace. So how do you know you have a new technology that can remove them. New research by Elorm Ezugbe, published in ACS ES&T Water, shows that the microbiology tool flow cytometry (FCM) outshines conventional turbidity
measurements for detecting these tiny pollutants[SR1.1], especially at low concentrations.
