Martijn Ridder and Sjoerd Kiewiet to represent the Netherlands at Stockholm Junior Water Prize
Martijn Ridder and Sjoerd Kiewiet, students from the island of Ameland, have won the Dutch final of the Stockholm Junior Water Prize and will represent the Netherlands at the international competition this August in Sweden.
Motivated by the drinking water challenges on their Wadden Island, the two high school students conducted research at Wetsus, exploring an alternative desalination method under the guidance of PhD-researcher Kecen Li. Their project stood out among the national finalists. According to the jury, their work demonstrated not only a deep understanding of the innovative technique but also its practical relevance, as they successfully modeled its application using seawater data from the Ameland region.
We are proud to support these promising young researchers and wish them the best of luck in Stockholm!
Note: The public vote will open soon — keep an eye on our social media channels!

Recap of the Wetsus Recruitment Challenge
On July 2nd and 3rd, we hosted our biannual Recruitment Challenge at Wetsus – a unique event where the best candidates for PhD vacancies are invited to our building for a full two-day experience.
The goal? For us: to identify the future scientific entrepreneurs, who will connect academic knowledge with industrial innovation. For the candidates: to explore whether Wetsus is the right place to take the next step in their scientific careers.
Over the course of the event, the candidates participated in a diverse selection process, including a writing assignment to assess their project writing skills, a presentation about their MSc thesis result and an in-depth job interview with our scientists and project leaders.
Social interactions are also part of the plan, including a lab tour, social drinks with Wetsus staff, and a shared dinner.
In addition, informative presentations were given by our impact director Bert Hamelers and Cristina Gagliano, our Doctoral Recruitment Coordinator, who introduced the specifics of the Wetsus PhD program – as captured in the photo!
All in all, it was another successful edition filled with enthusiasm, meaningful connections, and promising talent.
