Type of Project: Internship project.
Starting date: February 2023.
Duration: 6 months.
Salary: Allowance of €200 or 400 per month, subject to personal situation.
Location: Wetsus – European Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Water Technology (Leeuwarden, Netherlands).

Project description:
Activated sludge is normally produced as a waste by-product in biological wastewater treatment plants. Within the circular economy concept, activated sludge can be a raw material and a resource to produce renewable products, for instance polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs). PHAs are polyesters with attractive properties for the chemical and bioplastic industries as well as being biobased and biodegradable. However, there is a need for fundamental understanding and the development of novel principles in methods that will ensure reliable PHA production in yields, quantity and quality that a regional circular economy can be built on.

At Wetsus, in the theme “Biopolymers from water” ( we develop novel and robust polymer recovery engineering principles for the mixed culture PHA production methods in support of ongoing technology scale-up developments. The focus of this project in on the solvent recovery of PHA.

Your profile:
1. Student in chemical engineering, material sciences, biotechnology or similar.
2. Enrollment at European university. For non-EU citizens enrollment at a Dutch university is required.
3. Practical laboratory experience and analytical work.
4. Fluency in English (speaking, writing and communication skills).
5. Highly motivated, enthusiastic and independent thinker who also likes to work in a team.

Your tasks:
1. Operation of the solvent based PHA recovery pilot.
2. Monitoring and evaluation of process performance.
3. Quality characterization of the produced PHAs (e.g. TGA and DSC).
4. Interaction and collaboration within a dynamic multidisciplinary and multinational research team.
