resistance in ozonated wastewater

Antimicrobial resistant (AMR) has become a serious threat to the environment and public health worldwide according to the World Health Organization. Wastewater has been recognized as one of the sources of releasing AMR elements into aquatic environments. Advanced wastewater treatment (AWWT) is now emerging as an effective treatment to remove pharmaceuticals from wastewater. However, lab scale studies show that AMR survives and regrows in higher concentrations after applying one of the most promising AWWT, ozonation. To confirm whether ozonation will be a risk on the spread of AMR, a project has been set up to quantify antibiotic resistant bacteria and genes on ozonated wastewater.


Your responsibilities

  • Sampling from treatment plants (field scale) and ozone reactor (lab scale)
  • Monitoring the ozone reactor
  • DNA extractions & qPCR
  • Data analysis and report

Type of project: BSc or MSc thesis or internship

Starting date: September – November 2022

Duration: 6-9 months

Location: Wetsus, European centre of excellence for sustainable water technology (Leeuwarden, the Netherlands)

Our requirements

  • EU citizen or international student registered at a Dutch university enrolled in graduate (BSc or MSc) studies
  • Background in Molecular Biology
  • Good English communication skills (verbal and written)
  • A driving license is preferred (for field sampling)
  • Operation of reactors is a plus
