This year’s theme, “From Laboratory to Society,” explores how Wetsus research can translate into real-world impact, strengthening connections between technological innovation and a cleaner, more sustainable society.
Join us to explore how technical innovation can be translated into societal benefits, bringing together a pluralistic view of laboratory research with a broader socio-cultural perspective on technology development and adoption. These themes will be explored in the keynote address by Harro Maat (WUR), followed by a pitch of practical examples. Following the keynote, Wetsus PhD researchers will present their work across a range of cutting-edge research themes. Each session will conclude with panel discussions and reflections from experts representing our partner universities and industry partners.
Please below, before 19 November, to confirm your participation. Wetsus Discover Day is free and open for employees from all our participant companies and organizations.
11:00 – 12:00 Laboratory technical workshop: Microscopy. Join the laboratory workshop, with hands-on experience using our microscopy techniques, to explore biosensors, crystallisation, and adsorbent characterisations. (Maximum 30 participants).

13:35 – 14:25 Keynote lecture by Harro Maat, Wageningen University and Research: Fluid laboratories; guiding the flows between technology and society
In this talk, Harro Maat explores the relationship between technology and society by looking not only at technology adoption after development, but also at the laboratory itself. Drawing on social science and the history of technology, he examines how laboratories separate technical challenges from their user environments and how this shapes the development and scaling of new technologies. The key message is that understanding technology adoption requires a more pluralistic view of laboratories and a socio-cultural perspective on how people and societies interact with technology. Examples of real-world practices in the water sector will be presented to illustrate how technology adoption can be strengthened and translated into meaningful societal impact.
