Project description:
Agricultural productivity depends on the use of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) fertilisers. However, the conventional production of these fertilisers is energy and resource-intensive and these fertilisers end up in waste streams. The production of fertiliser from (source-separated) wastewater, particularly through electrochemical systems (ES), offers significant benefits. ES can use renewable electricity and minimise the use of chemicals. Therefore, ES facilitate the recycling of nutrients to agriculture while minimising resource depletion and preventing environmental damage. The concept is proven, however there are still unwanted contaminants in the final products. This project aims to mitigate the formation of unwanted contaminants in the products of ES nutrient recovery.
