Shortcutting the Nitrogen Cycle: N.E.W.B.I.E.S. animation

Shortcutting the Nitrogen Cycle: organic nitrogen is a needed macronutrient for crop growth, but when present at too high concentrations it can lead to loss of biodiversity. N.E.W.B.I.E.S. animation about a solution https://youtu.be/RH-3aWlzkNg

We seem to have a love-hate relationship with organic nitrogen: much needed as a macronutrient for crop growth in agriculture, when present in natural areas at too high concentrations it can lead to loss of biodiversity. The production of ammonia based fertilizers from inert nitrogen gas (N2) is responsible for about 1 to 2% of the worldwide energy consumption. The degradation of organic nitrogen in wastewater treatment facilities contributes heavily to the overall central wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) costs. Shortcutting this human-driven part of the nitrogen cycle therefore provides an enticing perspective, and that’s what the N.E.W.B.I.E.S. project is all about! Our animation tells you more!
