Type of project: MSc Thesis/internship
Starting date: April/May 2026
Duration: 6 months
Location: Wetsus, European centre of excellence for sustainable water technology, at Leeuwarden

Background
Interested in both thermodynamics and microbiology? Ready to explore a truly multidisciplinary research challenge? This project is perfect for you.
Greywater is a mixing stream of household wastewater that does not contain toilet flushing water, including wastewater from showering, washing machines, dishwashers, etc. Greywater contains a large amount of thermal energy, making it highly attractive for heat recovery using heat pumps. However, greywater has a large amount of microorganisms and nutrients. During the heat recovery process, the heat exchangers remain in continuous contact with greywater for a long time, which promotes the development of biofouling layers on exchanger surfaces. This biofouling can severely reduce heat transfer efficiency and compromise overall system performance. In this project, we are eager to investigate the biofouling formation in greywater heat recovery systems and develop effective strategies to mitigate or prevent it
