Type of project: BSc/MScThesis/Internship.
Duration: 5 – 8 months, starting April/May, 2024 or later (can be discussed).
Location: Wetsus, European centre of excellence for sustainable water technology, Leeuwarden, NL.
– The allowance for students is €200. The student can apply for ‘Wetsus Grant’ allowance (€200 extra; an internal committee decides if the allowance will be granted*).
– Students can apply for Erasmus grant; (if the Erasmus grant is less than €400, the student can apply for the Wetsus Grant).
*The Wetsus Grant allowance is not guaranteed and must be approved by the Grant Committee.

Project description:
Agricultural productivity depends on the use of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) fertilisers. However, the conventional production of these fertilisers is energy and resource-intensive and these fertilisers end up in waste streams. The production of fertiliser from (source-separated) wastewater, particularly through electrochemical systems (ES), offers significant benefits. ES can use renewable electricity and minimise the use of chemicals. Therefore, ES facilitate the recycling of nutrients to agriculture while minimising resource depletion and preventing environmental damage. The concept is proven, however inorganic scaling on the membrane still limits the application of ES on a larger scale. This project aims to mitigate unwanted inorganic scaling within the ES by investigating integrated chemical-free solutions.


  • Bachelor or master’s student with a background in chemical engineering, chemistry, or environmental engineering/science.
  • EU citizen or non-EU citizen already enrolled in a Dutch university.
  • Fluent in English (speaking, writing and communication skills).
  • Interest in practical laboratory experience and analytical work.
  • Preferred skills: (Electro)chemistry, experimental experience, programming (python).

Your tasks:

  • Electrochemical systems assembly and operation.
  • Solution/wastewater and solid analyses (IC, ICP, SEM-EDX, etc.).
  • Data analysis and modelling.
